Our Heritage: The Spirit of Durgotsav

Durga Pujo celebrates the victory of Goddess Durga over the demon Mahishasur—a powerful tale of good triumphing over evil. Her annual homecoming is a joyous event that fills our world with hope and celebrates the divine feminine energy, Shakti.

The community festival, or Sarbojanin Pujo, began in the late 18th century when twelve friends in Bengal, barred from a private pujo, started one ‘for all.’ This revolutionary idea transformed the festival from an exclusive affair into a grand public celebration, a spirit we now bring to Malhar.
Today, this vibrant festival has a global footprint. In India alone, over 40,000 pujas take place annually. In a proud moment for our culture, Durga Pujo’s unique blend of art and community spirit earned it a place on UNESCO’s list of Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.

More than a ritual, Durga Pujo is a social unifier. For five days, it erases boundaries of age, faith, and background. It is an open-air art gallery, a grand food festival, and a heartfelt reunion of friends and family, strengthening our community with shared joy and creativity

The Pujo Spirit...it starts with Kena-kata

For anyone new to the lingo, 'Kena-kata' is our lovely Bengali word for shopping! And let's be honest, the true Pujo spirit doesn't begin with the first sound of the dhak. It awakens with the cherished tradition of 'Pujo'r Kena-kata'—that wonderful, chaotic spree of buying new jama-kapor (clothes!) for our loved ones.
But here’s the thing… why should the best part end before the main event? At Utsob, we’re making sure the 'Kena-kata' continues right through the festivities. Come and keep the most joyful tradition alive with us!
Check out what’s on offer and happy shopping!
